A'Sharqiyah Sands Oman

The character of this region weaves together three landscapes, each with its own distinct feel. Along the coastline, which stretches beside the Arabian Sea and part of the Sea of Oman, you can sense the story of the tough work done by resilient seafaring men. Their tools are the boats they build with their own hands, and their “ammunition” is the fishing nets they skillfully spin while singing rhythmic work songs. Under the cover of night, they sail out and face the sea’s powerful waves, constantly balancing the need to earn a living with the hope of returning home safely. At dawn, they come back with nets brimming with fish, repeating the heartfelt refrain: “Thanks be to Allah” for His blessings and their safe return. This is the first environment of South A’Sharqiyah Governorate, home to the richest fishing grounds in Oman. The second landscape is the sweeping sand dunes, like a vast canvas of natural art, reflecting the peace of nomadic life. Here, in a pastoral setting, herds of cattle, camels and horses roam – animals for which North and South A’Sharqiyah Governorates are well known. This way of life is perfectly captured in Bidiya, where camel and horse races are held, attracting spectators from across the Sultanate and from abroad. The third landscape is a blend of urban and agricultural life, where the nomadic desert world and the coastal communities meet. This region also has a rich history. In the Wilayat of Ras Al Hadd in South A’Sharqiyah Governorate, Allied aircraft were hidden during the Second World War. Its winding lanes still stand as a refuge for sailors seeking shelter from fierce storms and strong winds.
